Johann & Sebastian………. the cats

Many of you have asked us what we are going to “do” with the cats?

Johann and Sebastian came to our house as tiny kittens 19 years ago in March.  At the time we had a cat named Bug ~ so it was Johann Sebastian Bug……..we are music nerds that way.  They have grown up and grown old here and we could not have asked for better companions.

Sebastian

One spring when he was very young, Sebastian got stuck in a tree & Marla had to come home from work with a borrowed ladder to get him out.  (Thank god Erin heard him meowing from a hole he could see out of!).  Johann is the neighborhood pretty boy and he has enjoyed his fair share of food (some people may even have called him “fat” in his younger days).

They are both on prescription kidney care food.  Sebastian has trouble getting UP to the couch while Johann has trouble getting DOWN.  Johann is not quite “all there” after a couple of strokes a few years ago, and Sebastian is “vocal” sometimes to the point of us wondering if someone is actually chopping off his tail or if he is just a bit demented.  You wouldn’t know from their fur that they are 19 ~ throughout their lives they have had the softest and most glossy coats of any cats we’ve ever had.

Much to our relief, in spite of those physical challenges and the possibility they may pass over the rainbow bridge while we are out, our amazing friends have volunteered to foster them for us.

Sebastian is going live with our friend Deb at her home for wayward pets.  We have known her for many years and ridden many, many, many bicycle miles together. She is one of the most compassionate, generous and kind people we know.  Sebastian will be with two other cats who are a bit younger than he is, a dog that is old for a dog but not as old as Sebastian in people years and Deb’s fiancee Ken.  Sebastian tells us he is looking forward to getting acquainted with a new space, being spoiled as the elder statesman in the house and hoping that there won’t be any “special” rides or spa days at the vet’s office anytime in the near future.

Johann

Johann will be the Alpha pet with our friend Jeanne, her son Wyatt and their dog Mortie. We had a get to know you session the other day and after Johann got over his shock at seeing a dog in our house he set about establishing his dominance over Morty in short order.  Little advice Morty ~ don’t get too close, those claws are sharp!  Johann is a champion sleeper when he’s not in the back yard pulling the flowers off of the Jonny Jump-ups and looking for a block of sunshine and shade so he can alternate between too hot and too cool.  Wyatt especially is looking forward to having a cat, as the dog Mortie is not his favorite animal ~ he an Johann may be allies in this.  Jeanne has had a special place in her heart for Johann for a long time and we know her kindness and thoughtful care will be so good for Johann while we’re gone.

Thank you to both of these brave and generous women for taking in these two.  Thanks for being willing to upset your household until equilibrium is restored.  Thank you for the care and compassion we know you will bestow upon these two special creatures.  We could not do this trip without knowing they were well cared for.
