6/15 ~ the countdown stands at 15 days…..ack!
We’ve been preparing for this trip for what seems forever but started on “the plan” to package everything up January 1st of this year.
We worked on the guest bedroom for what seemed like a month….yes, it took a long time because like many people our guest bedroom is storage for all the things we want to keep but don’t want in our every day space, or don’t know if we want to keep but need a space to store it in the meantime, or you absolutely DON’T want to keep it but you feel like you should keep it because after all, it belonged to your mother/grandmother/brother/ex girlfriend or “could” be worth something.
The name Marie Kondo has become a verb ~ but I cannot “Marie Kondo” some things. This is not because I am incapable, its because things are not just things….they are talismans of our past that give meaning to our lives; my dad’s old SPEBSQUA programs that mention him in the members section help me remember him as more than just a stroke victim; our wedding memories box that has weird dried flowers, a copy of the invitation and a few cards that remind us of how gloriously diverse and joyful our community is; music…..so much music…….some I have sung, most I have directed ~ all of it going to another home…….which is both a relief and a sorrow; the quilt my mom made out of old clothes that is so odd and weirdly colored and stained in a couple of places….. but like her, so so warm ~ it makes me feel held by her, even now.
You see the problem here?
Our goal was to have things sorted ~ keep, throw away/recycle, giveaway ~ by June 1st. Bwa ha ha ha ha ha ha!!!!!!! That 100% did not happen……I mean, we gave it a good shot, but July 1st seemed so far away. Now our goal is to have everything out by June 25th ~ which is when the people come to clean the house for the renters.
This too is a part of the adventure I think ~ deciding what to keep, give away, throw away. The house has gradually become more and more empty as the weeks have gone by until now there are whole rooms that only contain a few odds & ends. The plants are gone, which is the weirdest. The cats remain for another week or so then they go to their respective foster placements for the year. Next week Habitat comes to take away the table & chairs and the week after that everything goes to storage.
Speaking of storage ~ how awesome is it that our neighbor is letting us use her garage for our storage. Thanks Nancy ~ YOU ARE AWESOME.
