Shot day

Hey, yo, I’m just like my country,

I’m young, scrappy, and hungry

And I’m not throwin’ away my shot

“My Shot”, Hamilton an American Musical, Lin-Manuel Miranda

For those Hamilton fans out there, you’re welcome for the ear worm.

This morning Marla and I got the majority of our vaccines for the trip and that song has been running through my head all day.

About a month ago we went to Passport Health for a consult on what vaccines we would need for the Southeast Asia portion of our trip. They advised us to get: Hepatitis AB, a polio booster, a tetanus booster, Typhoid, Yellow Fever, and Japanese Encephalitis.

While I expected the Typhoid and Yellow Fever recommendations, the name of Japanese Encephalitis terrified me, and the polio booster confused me. The reason for the polio booster is because there is a CDC Level 2 Global Polio travel notice in several places in the world, three of which, are countries we are visiting: Canada, United Kingdom, and Indonesia.

We had the opportunity to get all of our vaccines at Passport Health, but we wanted to see if we could get some of them covered by insurance. It turns out that the Hepatitis AB, Polio booster, and Tetanus booster are all covered by insurance, but the rest are not. We learned from our cousin Alison that Denver Health had a Travel Immunization Clinic and that it cost about 30% less for our vaccinations than it would have at Passport Health.
