Big waterfalls, big trees, big rocks

Day 10 – 13: Yosemite National Park

The scale of nature in Yosemite National Park is simply off the charts. Everything seems huge: giant rocks formed by glaciers, massive waterfalls that pour over them, and 300 foot giant sequoias that climb high into the sky.

We spent 3 days in Yosemite National Park. One full day to tour Yosemite Valley on our bicycles (which I would highly recommend), where I took approximately 50 pictures of Half Dome trying to get a decent shot. A second day was dedicated to seeking out enormous trees. The equivalent of a third day was consumed by traveling to and from the park.

In our search for giant trees, we went for a “moderately strenuous” hike in Merced Grove that was supposed to be about 3 miles round trip. It was a beautiful morning and we were having a delightful conversation and completely missed this super important sign that would have pointed us in the direction of the action grove and turned our 3 mile hike into a 6 mile hike.

Merced Grove sign that we totally missed

We did manage to find the Giant Sequoias…eventually. It’s pretty hard to capture how tall a 300 foot tree really is on a cell phone camera, but this is what I got.

  1. Great photos! I love hearing about your adventures — be safe!

  2. What beautiful country. Hope you girls are surviving the heat wave!

  3. That’s one of my most favorite places on earth and I’ve only been there once when I was a teenager. You’re inspiring me to experience it again only without all the teenage angst and eye rolls at my “annoying parents” as they tried to take pictures of us. Maybe I can be the annoying parent this next time!

Thank you for taking us along on your journey with your stories and pictures!

  4. Beautiful girlies! You mentioned a 3rd day consumed by traveling in/out of the Park. I just read an article yesterday in fact – reporting the public is asking (due to the overcrowding) that Yosemite reinstate the reservation system it suspended for this year. If overcrowding was your experience – it certainly looks like you made the very best of it nonetheless. Your photos are just awesome, thank you for taking the time to post and write of your adventures. I laughed out loud @ the missing of the sign – have done that myself… more times than I care to admit. I’ve yet to see/touch the Giant Sequoias and I am now reminded that I absolutely MUST. Hugs to you both…
