I love the sentiment of this hop scotch course. It was very involved and had several different steps along the way that were very different from a “normal” hop scotch: “pop the bubbles”, “shoot the moon”, and a couple of others I can’t remember now. Unfortunately, I thought of taking a picture of it too late to get anything cool, but here’s what I got.

We only spent two days in Portland, and both Marla and I felt like we could have easily spent one more. We had a lovely Airbnb that was within walking distance of several great restaurants. Ava Gene’s, a restaurant that we walked to on the hop scotch route, is definitely one I would recommend to anyone coming through town.

Any bibliophile will tell you that no trip to Portland is complete without a visit to Powell’s City of Books, an amazing large independent book store in downtown Portland. Powell’s City of Books is just one of the trifecta of independent bookstores that one must visit in the western United States. The other two are The Tattered Cover, in Denver, and The Elliot Bay Book Company in Seattle.
After Portland, we headed out to the Olympic Peninsula where we stayed in a funky little secluded cabin just outside of Brinnon, WA, near Olympic National Park. When we pulled up to the cabin, Marla’s first reaction was, “Huh, weird.”
To me, it looked exactly like the pictures in HipCamp ad, but maybe she expected something different? It was a one-room cabin with a kitchen that had running water and an electric stove fueled by the type of propane tank you would get for your gas grill. But it also had running water which meant a flushing toilet and shower: luxury!

We entered Olympic National Park via the Port Angeles Visitor Center and did the Heart o the Hills hike through a bunch of old growth forest. Because there was a fire that destroyed the Hurricane Ridge Visitor Center, this hike was one of the few that were available.

The next day we headed over to the other side of the peninsula to Hoh Rainforest Visitor Center. Unfortunately, we didn’t end up going in because the line was at least 2 hours long and it was already 3 p.m., but the road leading to the super long line went through some really beautiful forest. The road really gave me the feeling that I was traveling to somewhere enchanted.
