1,048 miles, 2 states, 2 old friends, 2 locks on the Erie Canal, 2 parents, 1 cousin, 1 final North American destination, $261.20 OVER budget.
We started the week in Maine, trekked across New York then bombed south for a long driving day to our final NoAm (trademark pending) destination with Erin’s parents in Reston Virginia.
This week our budget creep came from making ~$800 worth of reservations in Europe on North America’s budget. Europe has a different (higher) daily budget than what we allocated for North America, but we are currently still in North America, so that is the budget we are applying for this week.
We got on the road to Virginia with a bittersweet feeling. We were looking forward to seeing Erin’s parents and family and being in one place for 6 consecutive nights. We are looking forward to trading long days in the car for longer train trips to different places in Western Europe.
We are excited, overwhelmed, and a little nervous about this next part of the trip. In the spirit of the “meander”, there have been a lot less reservations made in advance, and we will be seeing a lot fewer familiar faces over the coming months. It’s going to be very different, but we’re ready for the next part of the adventure!
