Week #12 ~ Recap

273 miles, 2 countries, 2 cities, 2 trains, 1 bike rental, 1 haircut, 12,000 steps per day, 1 palace, 1 church, 1 cathedral, 3 museums, 2 hostels, $129.55 UNDER budget—yay!!!

“Hope” on a signpost made from discarded COVID tests

To both our surprise and delight, we have discovered that our experience in Western Europe has been less expensive than we expected mostly due to no car or gas expenses, and much cheaper food and alcohol. Our most expensive meal so far was a French meal in Berlin and we had to work at that to cost $150 which included a bottle of wine, 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, and 2 desserts.

We have started to compile a “landing list” of things that we have found to be very useful for us in the first day or two in a new foreign city. So far they include:

  1. Download the local public transportation app to get mobile passes on local trains, trams, and busses.
  2. Look for any discounts for local attractions
  3. Download Rick Steve’s free audio city tour guides — excellent Day 1 orientation material.

We crossed the 3 month mark on this journey last Friday; 10 days in Europe already have flown by.
