Week #38 ~ Recap

570 miles, 1 major city, 1 ferry ride, 1 ocean drive, 2 caravan parks, 1 state park, 6 live kangaroos, 1 campfire, 215.06 over budget. Between the rental costs, gas, and campground fees, the campervan has been more expensive than what we normally spend on lodging which has pushed us into budget overages, but it’s totally been worth it.

This week was heaven in Australia.

3rd night campfire

Sydney and the Darlinghurst neighborhood in particular was our home for four nights and we loved it. Sydney is a great city with lots to do and see. One of Marla’s favorite things may have been Hyde Park with its humongous trees and centerpiece fountain, but the Botanic Gardens came in a close second. We took a ferry ride to Manly and an obligatory tour of the Sydney Opera House. We had a harbor front drink or two and skimmed the St Patricks Day Festival in the Rocks neighborhood.

Clearly camping is a big thing in Australia. No matter what town you are in there is generally a developed campground with all of the amenities. Amenities include a community kitchen with fridge, hot/cold running water and grill, clean showers and toilets and if you’ve reserved the right site, power and water for your caravan. We are thoroughly impressed with all of this ~ but you can also “free camp” in various bush sites or parks. Those sites generally come with views to die for and a more relaxed vibe than developed camps. Wherever we’ve camped we have loved it!

6 more nights of van life then it’s on to Adelaide to see Sarah Tie and family. Cannot wait for each and every ocean view along the way!
