621 miles, 4 campsites, 10,000 videos of amazing waves & rock formations, 100s of pesky cockatoos, 10 sitings of brilliantly colored native birds, 1 flock of Emus, 1 wine tasting, 4 friends from home, 1 flock of sheep, $298.92 OVER budget. The budget overage is still associated to renting the campervan–but we definitely felt like it was worth the extra cost.

This week was the continuation of our amazing road trip through Melbourne onward to the Great Ocean Road then all the way to visit friends in Adelaide.
We have loved being on the road this week, and even though we were in developed campgrounds in a cushy camper van, it was so cool to be out in nature. The nights were quiet and you could see a million brilliant stars. The moon was full and felt very close ~ upside down from the Northern Hemisphere in fact ~ so we had to reintroduce ourselves to the man in the moon.
The cockatoos and kangaroos are “numerous” around here. So numerous in fact, that seeing them is almost commonplace……except for us. Kangaroos are in the park, by the ocean, hanging out in the grass, bounding across the road, etc, etc, etc. Native birds are as varied and variably colored as you can imagine. Every color of the rainbow is represented, and then you get white and black as bonus colors. The air around trees in the dawn and dusk is almost as entertaining as the ocean when watching birds go back & forth.
Being so close to the ocean we have been able to experience the many moods of the sea. The character of the water changes in response to the wind, the time of day, cloud cover, whether the waves come from the open ocean or are in a protected place ~ absolutely fascinating. There’s a metaphor for flexibility and acceptance there somewhere…..but for now we’re just enjoying the whole scene.
Next week ~ Adelaide to explore like a local with Sarah Tie and family, then on to Auckland to explore and prep for our cruise across the ocean!
