Week #42 ~ Recap

Week #42 saw us transition from “pollywogs” to “shellbacks” as we crossed the Equator and started moving north back back to the United States. There are all kinds of naval traditions that celebrate that transition. Our cruise ship had its own that involved a skit about King Neptune, an assistant cruise director dressed in drag, and a food fight.

For those of you with questions about the direction that the water swirls when you flush the toilet in the Southern Hemisphere: on the cruise ship, our observation has simply been, down. The very uninteresting explanation for that is because there is a vacuum system that sucks the water into whatever reservoir it’s stored into for black water treatment.

We have also added some more conversion formulas to our collection: nautical miles to land miles, and knots to miles per hour. A nautical mile equals 1.1508 land miles, and a knot 1.15 miles per hour. For those of you playing along at home, we have a little word problem for you: if our cruise ship was averaging 18 knots per hour, and the distance from Tahiti to Honolulu is 2,081 miles, how many days at sea will it take Marla and I to get to Hawaii. Leave your answer in the comments!

  1. I calculated 100.5 hours. If you’re sailing 24 hours/day that’s 4.2 days. 🙂

    1. I think if we maintained a constant speed coming into port, that would have been what our experience was. I think they slowed the speed down a bit so we actually arrived on Day 5.
