Week #46 ~ Recap

783 miles, 2 states, 1 weekend catch up with dear friends, 2 national parks, 1 museum, 1 National Historic Site, $811 OVER budget.

O’Keefe’s Pelvis series 1945

Santa Fe, Carlsbad, Marfa…..in a weird way you could say it was the triad of artistic experiences. Santa Fe is well known for the high desert clarity of light, rich browns and reds of Pueblo style buildings and deep comfortable leather chairs close by an indoor fireplace. Carlsbad Caverns are a symphonic testament to the power of time and water. The outdoor art and funky nature of Marfa Texas is hard to describe, but totally…….Marfa. These three places are works of art ~ whether man made or nature made.

Speaking of art ~ we were glad to meet our stylish and artistic friends Finessa & Kris in Santa Fe. We spent lovely days catching up and eating great food. We met them in Vancouver and now Santa Fe ~ have friendship, will travel. Immensely grateful to see them in Santa Fe.

Art of Time and Water, Carlsbad

Logically the climate is getting warmer the further south we go. No more frost on the tent in the mornings, but lots more lizards and turkey vultures. The spaces are vast, and Marla is paranoid about leaving any town no matter how small with less than a half a tank of gas.

We just realized on one of those long lonely stretches of road that when we get to Big Bend National Park next week we will have touched all of the borders of the contiguous U.S. on this meander! First we went west to the Pacific Ocean, then crossed the Canadian border a couple of times before ending up on the east coast and the Atlantic Ocean last fall. Our final National Park of the trip takes us to our southern border ~ it’s not Mexico but you can see it from there!

Next week, a whole lot of Texas ~ Big Bend, San Antonio and a quick stop in Austin. Bring on the barbecue!
